Transform Your Outdoor Space Into a Cozy Oasis
As the temperature rises and pollen levels drop, it's finally time to take your indoor activities outside. But Kate, it just isn’t as cozy on my porch as it is in my living room! Well, that’s exactly why I’m here—to help you turn your outdoor space into an environment you'll want to begin and end your day in.
Some of my favorite memories are of friends and family gathered outdoors, creating moments that are simply unforgettable. Just picture this: you're lounging in the comfiest chair, a gentle breeze brushing past, a small fire crackling nearby, the soothing sound of water in the background, and the warm glow of a beautifully scented candle as the sun sets. Sounds like a dream, right? The best part? You can create that exact vibe right at home.
Here are my top tips and tricks to help turn your outdoor space into everything you've imagined and more:
Step One: Create Multiple Zones Within One Space
Blend dining and lounging areas into a single open space to meet your hosting needs while creating a natural flow between activities. This adds both functionality and charm.
Step Two: Weatherproof Your Space
Who wants to invest in something that only gets used once a year? Not me! That’s why I recommend creating a four-season porch. Consult with a designer to explore the materials and layout that will suit your climate and style. They can also help design window and door patterns to make the space feel intentional and complete.
Step Three: Mix Materials
Incorporate a variety of textures like woven elements, wood, stone, and metal. These sturdy materials are ideal for outdoor use. Add softness and comfort with upholstered pieces using durable outdoor fabrics like Sunbrella. Try mixing and matching these materials across your chairs, sofas, tables, rugs—even your pillows—for a layered and inviting look.
Step Four: Add Greenery
Even if your patio is already surrounded by nature, bringing in planters filled with your favorite flowers, herbs, or plants adds a magical, whimsical touch. It softens harder surfaces like concrete or stone and brings bursts of color and fragrance to the space.
Step Five: Embrace Natural Elements
Incorporate calming natural elements like fire and water. A cozy fire pit surrounded by lounge seating creates the perfect place to unwind. Water features—from fountains to water walls to pools—introduce a tranquil vibe that soothes the senses and elevates the overall atmosphere.
Now that you’ve got the steps to create your outdoor oasis, you might be wondering: Where do I shop?
