Put yourself on display!

A bookshelf is one of the best places in your home to showcase who you are. Whether it’s your favorite books, tchotchkes, flowers, photos, lamps, or art—it’s your canvas to make your space feel uniquely you.

Here are a few simple steps I recommend to help you create a beautifully genuine bookshelf:

Step One: Start with a Blank Canvas
Begin with an empty shelf and choose a guide or layout style to follow. I personally love using the golden ratio as a foundation, but there are many other design principles you can explore—like mirroring and pairing, the rule of threes, color coordination, and more.

Step Two: Create an “Anchor Shelf”
This is the shelf with the most visual weight. It draws the eye and sets the tone. Large books or substantial ceramics are perfect here. Don’t be afraid to go bold—this shelf grounds your entire display.

Step Three: Build the Base of the Golden Ratio
If you're following the golden ratio, begin the curve on your bottom shelf. Place shorter objects on the right side and gradually increase height as you move to the left. This subtle slope adds visual flow and balance.

Step Four: Fill in the Middle Shelves
Work your way up the shelves, continuing the visual curve you started. Pay close attention to the height and spacing of items to maintain that flowing line. This is where your creativity really comes into play—mix textures, layer objects, and let your personality shine.

Step Five: Adjust Based on Visual Weight
Step back and observe. Move items around to balance the composition. I like using black or dark-toned pieces to create visual “anchors” that guide the eye across the bookshelf.

And there you have it! I hope these tips help you create a shelf that feels both beautiful and personal. I’d love to see what you come up with—feel free to share your photos with us via email or Instagram.

Now go ahead—make it even more beautiful than how you found it!
