We all love a buttery treat.

And what better way to indulge than to completely immerse yourself in it? As a primary color, yellow creates a sense of grounding and stability. According to color theory, it also evokes feelings of cheerfulness and high energy. I know this from experience!

When I first moved to America, my stepdad asked what color I wanted my new room to be. Without hesitation, I said yellow. I was bursting with excitement to explore this new country and everything it had to offer—and yellow felt like the perfect expression of that joy and anticipation. As Rule #16 reminds us: infusing your home with emotion helps you internalize those feelings yourself.

So, how can we incorporate this new “neutral” into our homes? Oh, there are so many ways.

Start with the walls—the boldest and most immersive option. I know, I know: “But Kate, yellow walls are so outdated!”Not anymore, friends. I'm here to tell you that it's back—and it's here to bring the biggest, brightest smile to your space.

But don’t confuse it with other tones of yellow. We’re talking about a solid, buttery yellow—a softer, more muted shade. Try painting the trim and ceiling too, to create a joyful, cocoon-like effect for those gray, gloomy days.

Furniture is another fun way to add a pop of butter yellow. I especially love painted wood pieces like chairs and tables. Or go plush—a velvety butter-yellow couch might just become your new favorite nap or late-night reading spot.

Window treatments offer a subtler approach. Sheer curtains or Roman shades in this hue can transform a space when natural light filters through them. The result? A soft, golden glow that feels warm, cozy, and effortlessly inviting.

And of course, don’t forget the accessories—a beautiful yellow bowl, a stack of sunny-hued books, or even art frames can all add joyful touches to your decor.

Butter yellow is incredibly versatile and pairs beautifully with almost any palette—especially purples, reds, pinks, and oranges. So why not brighten your home with a touch of this cheerful, grounded, and totally lovable color? Stay beautiful!
