How are we influenced by design?

One of the first things that comes to mind is the influence of my study abroad trip to Paris, France. Oh yes, what an incredible memory! The design, the art, the culture, the pastries—and, of course, the amazing friend I got to share it with: Rachael Miller, the founder of REM Interiors. Rachael and I were just two 20-year-olds exploring the beauty of Parisian style, visiting the stunning Monet’s gardens, and making delicious pasta in our tiny apartment on Rue Saint Jacques (with a couple glasses of rosé). Our studies at the Paris American Academy were some of the most formative and influential moments of our lives. Now, we’re able to apply what we learned to our approach to design. So, let’s hear some design advice from one of my longtime friends and an incredible designer, Rachael Miller.

1. What have you taken from your studies in Paris into your current interior design practice?

Since it was my first time outside the U.S., I quickly realized that the ‘culture shock’ had me on higher alert, taking in all the buildings, homes, and churches that have been around for centuries. It was a reminder of how design was done historically. The benefit of this experience is that my colleagues and I were studying modern techniques while immersed in an environment rich with history. To answer directly: I learned that there’s a powerful effect when you blend timeless, historical elements with modern techniques.

2. What is your favorite interior element to design and why?

I have two answers:

Individualism, individualism, individualism. I can’t say it enough—I love seeing my clients’ personalities come to life through the spaces we create together. It’s almost like personifying a home, and it’s fascinating how someone can feel completely themselves when surrounded by things that reflect who they are—both on the inside and the outside.

As for materialism, I love designing kitchens, living rooms, and primary bathrooms! It’s amazing how something as simple as cabinets, backsplash, flooring, paint, stain, and hardware can be reimagined in so many ways. By taking each element in a different direction, you can end up with a completely different style every time. I love that creative challenge!

3. Many of us have accumulated home items from different styles. How do you recommend pairing or editing down our home decor?

If you feel attached to something, I believe there’s a place for everything. If you love an item and feel a connection to it, it will likely fit into the design style you're aiming for. I recommend starting with Pinterest. Look at interior design inspiration and start pinning the things you love. Then, step back and analyze those pins. You’ll often find patterns and recurring design elements that, when combined, form your unique style. From there, you can decide which keepsakes fit into the vision and which don’t. If you love it, keep it! If you don’t, donate it!

4. How can someone tastefully personalize their interiors?

Start with one thing you know about yourself. It could be a specific color you love or a texture that speaks to you. By beginning with something small and specific, you can build your design around it. If you surround yourself with beautiful design but center it on something unique to you, the space will naturally reflect who you are.

5. What’s your favorite stone to use in homes?

Either quartzite or marble! A lot of people hesitate to use marble for countertops because it can stain easily, but with proper care and sealing, it can remain beautiful for years. I personally love the lived-in look of marble, even with the occasional stain. Quartzite is also a favorite of mine—it’s durable, low-maintenance, heat-resistant like quartz, and comes in a variety of designs. It checks so many boxes!

6. Any colors or patterns you’re obsessed with right now?

I’m really loving deep, rich, and vibrant colors right now—espresso browns, jade and emerald greens, mustard yellows. The list goes on and on!

7. Nickel or brass?

Ooh, this is a tough one! I love both—they’re timeless in the right setting. But if I had to choose just one, I’d definitely go with polished nickel.

8. Any other tips or design advice you’d like to share?

I have two tips:

  1. Listen and observe. It sounds simple, but it has the biggest impact on the final results. If you truly listen and observe to understand what the goal is, you can create a clearer picture of the finish line and bring your talents to make it happen.

  2. Immerse yourself in designs you love. I use my interiors Instagram more often than my personal one! It keeps me inspired, helps me grow professionally, and reminds me why I do what I do.

Well, there you have it, folks! I love Rachael’s approach to blending the old with the new, incorporating individuality into your home, and immersing yourself in your favorite designs. These are fantastic tips to keep in mind when making your home more beautiful and uniquely yours!
